What is the SkinPen?
The SkinPen is the only FDA cleared microneedling device on the market. The device utilizes the natural wound healing process to improve and plump the skin from the inside out. As we age, the elasticity and tone of the skin decreases. This can be exacerbated by previous acne scarring, sun damage, and poor lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking excessively.
This device is so effective that it has virtually replaced (fractional) laser resurfacing in our practice. Microneedling with the SkinPen can be utilized in conjunction with Botox, Collagen Fillers and Face Lift surgeries to give patients their best results.
What to Expect During Your SkinPen Microneedling Treatment
Microneedling is an office procedure whereby multiple tiny holes are created in the skin of the face, neck, and chest. The tiny holes trigger natural wound healing, including the growth of collagen to tighten and improve skin texture and tone. Microneedling is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy. By helping to accelerate skin turnover, long-lasting improvement can be seen. This is particularly noticeable if a skin care regimen is utilized and repeated treatments are done over time. There is minimal pain/discomfort involved in the procedure and most patients would recommend this to others.
With up to three SkinPen treatments, patients can reverse years of sun damage, smooth acne scars, and wipe out wrinkles with just a day of social downtime after each one. Common reasons for choosing SkinPen treatment include: reducing lines around the lips, crepey skin under the eyes, acne scars and overall skin tightening. Results are immediate; however, most patients need 3 treatments for optimal results, spaced one month apart. Severe cases of acne scarring and sun damage can require up to 6 treatments.
Microneedling is an alternative to laser resurfacing. Both act to improve skin texture and tightening. The cost and downtime is less with microneedling. There is little down time and the procedure can be safely performed any time of year. There is some post – procedural redness associated that will last 1-2 days on average (versus one week for laser therapy), similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. Most patients are red the day of the procedure and then pink the following day. Makeup can be applied the day after the procedure and patients can resume social activites. Light and dark skin types can be treated with this device.
Prior to the procedure, topical numbing medicine is applied to the areas to be treated. The procedure lasts on average 30 minutes to 1 hour. The depth of the needle can and will be adjusted based on the treatment area.
Best of all, the results are provided without the need for invasive surgical techniques that require incisions and anesthesia. This limits the amount of risk posed to the patient and ensures optimized comfort throughout the treatment process.
After the SkinPen Treatment
After the procedure, a skin product will be applied and a skin care regimen will be recommended. Patients will notice immediate skin improvement, particularly around the eyes and mouth. The skin continues to remodel and improve over the following weeks for up to 3-6 months.
After undergoing a SkinPen treatment, patients don’t have to worry about a long period of recovery and there’s no need to take an excessive amount of time off work. Patients can safely undergo SkinPen microneedling and return to their normal daily activities in very little time.
