Many patients are concerned about scar location and quality of scar. I’d go so far as to say that a lot of (non-board-certified PS) surgeons try to convince patients that it’s better to avoid tummy tucks and just have liposuction because you can avoid a scar. Honestly, the vast majority of tummy tucks done elsewhere that I see in my office have botched scars that were not placed low in the correct location or have wavy, curving irregularities, so I can’t blame a lot of patients for the desire to avoid a scar.
•
Genetics definitely plays a role in the actual scar quality, some will keloid regardless, but this is uncommon for the vast majority of my patients. Ultimately, the technical ability and experience of the surgeon is critical in determining overall scar location, appearance and quality. The scar should look like a bikini line when placed correctly. Unfortunately when patients are laying down in the operating room table with drapes and things like that you can never tell if the scars is in the correct location until you see the patient standing with their clothes lowered below the pubic area.

SCAR PRECISION: the most common mistake I see in patients with prior tummy tucks done elsewhere is scars that are too high, or too wavy.
•In my experience, over 90% of tummy tuck scars are placed INCORRECTLY by plastic surgeons. The more extensive the procedure, the more errors occur.
•In fact, most patients that have high and irregular scars aren’t even aware!
•Tummy tuck scars should be LOW, IN THE BIKINI LINE👙!
• If the scar isn’t low, no pubic lift was done and there will be a contour irregularity in the lower abdomen!
•The scar should be low, near the groin crease
•It should not be anywhere near the height of the belly button at any point, front or back!
•Body contouring is technically challenging and there are VERY FEW EXPERTS in the world! 🌎
• You cannot tell a plastic surgeon you want a low scar and expect that to happen, they either know how to do it or they don’t. Bottom line.
• Plastic surgeons don’t learn how to do these surgeries in residency, they learn on their own
and it requires extensive experience to learn how to do all aspects correctly.
• A scar may appear low on the table when the blue towels are placed but this is very deceiving because you can’t see the groin crease.
